![]() ![]() However, I would personally recommend reading the series in sequence as the back history is such an important aspect of the book to understand the complexity of the plot. It's not essential that you start at the beginning of the series as it is possible to read this as a standalone story. New readers might not instantly realise that this is the follow-up book to The Ten Riddles of Earth Quicksmith. I think this is by Anne Glenn but unfortunately, I cannot find any information in the book to back this up. The book has been published by Firefly Press Ltd and has a cracking book cover image. Hello everybody - we hope you are managing to keep cool this week! One of our favourite books of July 2022 has to be the epic and thrilling second book in the QUICKSMITH series by Loris Owen. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the New York Times bestselling Unwind Dystology- Unwind, UnWholly, UnSouled, and UnDivided-Neal Shusterman thrilled readers with the story of a society that deals with its out-of-control teens by “unwinding” them-transplanting more than 99% of their bodies into other people. Still this story was not meant to be a sequel to Undivided, it’s more like a bonus and all in all, I enjoyed diving back into one of my favourite universes again. I liked the stories that we were given but at the same time, it would have been nice to get some new stories about our protagonists. The only thing I was slightly disappointed in, was that there was no short story about Connor, Risa wasn’t the main focus in the story that she was in and there was no new story about Lev. ![]() ![]() I was obviously incredibly excited to read this book, because I love the Unwind universe so much, but also a little nervous because I don’t always love short stories and Undivided was so incredibly perfect, that I wasn’t sure that this collection of short stories was entirely necessary, but I am glad to say, that whilst it’s not my favourite book from this universe, I did enjoy it and felt that most of the stories did add something to the universe. ![]() ![]() ![]() These and other details of Kissinger’s army service are recounted in Niall Ferguson’s Kissinger 1923-1968: The Idealist, the first of a projected two-volume biography.Īfter the war, Kissinger used the G.I. His unit crossed the Roer River in Operation Grenade in February 1945, then crossed the Rhine, and he subsequently performed counterintelligence work for which he earned the Bronze Star. Kissinger’s patriotism first manifested itself during the Second World War when he served with the 84 th Infantry Division of General William Simpson’s Ninth Army, and in November 1944 participated in the attack on Germany’s Siegfried Line. And above all, Henry Kissinger, a German Jew who fled Nazi Germany (where at least 13 members of his extended family perished in the Holocaust) in 1938, has been an American patriot. ![]() He has been both a brilliant academic and a prudent policymaker, a theorist and a practitioner. Judging by recent books and articles he has written, Kissinger’s mind still functions at a very high level even as his body necessarily weakens. He has known power, riches, and tragedy during his long life. On May 27, God willing, Henry Kissinger will celebrate his 100 th birthday. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, his initial response was: “I hate reading fairy tales. ![]() However, a collection of fairy tales would not have been Callum’s choice for our first collaborative book review. It was a cultural legacy I wanted to share with my son. ![]() I have a clear memory of my own father reading me Grimm’s fairy tales when I was about his age and I’ve drawn on those stories personally and professionally many times for, as Tatar describes the tales in her volume, these are “the stories that we all think we know - even when we are unable to tell them.” (xiv). However, one genre we have not explored together is fairy tales so when I saw the announcement of Maria Tatar’s new collection The Annotated Classic Fairy Tales I jumped at the opportunity to return to a group of well-known fairy tales and to share them with Callum. Callum’s recent preference for nonfiction has taken us in many new directions, from biology to volcanoes to trivia. ![]() We have eclectic taste and over the years have read most of the children’s classics and lots of popular culture titles. My eight-year-old son, Callum, and I enjoy reading together. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Readers who witnessed or experienced the oppression of the Irish Catholic church during their childhood will no doubt feel that this story strikes a particular chord. A very good read, albeit not for the light-hearted. The main character is larger than life, and the many other characters each carry plenty of weight to make them remarkable. The plot is simple enough but engaging and coherent from start to finish, with different perspectives introduced that add dimension to the story. Catholic Ireland of the 1950s is presented in all its harshness and without compromise. It somehow reminds one of Joyce's The Dead.
